Creator Spotlight: Sam Campos of Pineapple Man

In a time when the everyday comic book fan is looking for a bit more diversity in what they read, I got the chance to speak with Sam Campos. Sam is the creator of Pineapple Man, a hero whose story is based on and around the islands of Hawaii. What can originally be thought of as a tongue-in-cheek concept that grabs you, Pineapple Man will surprise you with the amount of work that has gone into it and makes you that much richer for reading it.

So Sam, what drove you to enter the world of comic books as a creator?
I had intended on pursuing and education in aeronautics, but didn’t have the $$$ to go to school, so I took a summer job that lasted almost 7 years. pine6This freaked me out. My wife suggested that I try art. Since I liked to draw, and was still reading comics it made sense to give it a go.

There are people out there who do not know you. Can you tell them what is your main focus as a creator, are you a writer, inker, penciler, publisher, letterer?
Back when we first published it, I created the character, my wife Gen wrote the stories based on what we were interested in. For this 2nd time round, I am the artist, writer and publisher. Gen is doing the lettering and web design, and Napua Ahina is doing an awesome job with the colors!!

Now that the kickstarter for Pineapple Man is over and was successful, what are you currently working on?
Currently working on the new Pineapple Man adventure: :Old School Lock Up”!

pine5How long have you been working on that?
About 2 weeks now!

What else have you worked on?
I have done work in movies over the years doing, concept art, story boards, weapon and costume design and fight choreography.

Where can people find more of your work?

What would you like to work on that you have not worked on yet?
I’m hoping to do a few more stories with Pineapple Man and then perhaps get back to the series that I was working on called DRAGONFLY. You can find out more about that here:
Do you still have a day job? If so how do you manage to get all your work done between that, comics and your personal life?Currently my full time job is Daddy day care. I do that in the day time and stay up all night working on other stuff. Let’s just say I don’t get to sleep pine2much! LOL!

If someone wants to meet you at a con, are there any that you attend regularly?
Yes, Pineapple Man is the mascot for the Hawaii Con that takes place on the big island of Hawaii annually. I also frequent the Kawaii Kon and will be making a first appearance at the Amazing Hawaii Comic Con in Honolulu this September!

Before we go is there any thing you would like to add that I have not touched on?
Pineapple Man will be featured along with several other comic creations from Hawaii in June’s issue of Hawaiian Airlines Hana Hou magazine! You can find them on Facebook! Thank you for taking the time to hear about Pineapple Man!! Wishing you all ALOHA!!!

For a little bit more about Sam here is the youtube video he had attached to a recent kickstarter on Pinappleman.
